Maca is a small root vegetable grown at high altitudes in the Andes, in some of the most highly mineralised soils that exist.

It is well known as the Incan Superfood. It has a rather distinctive malted flavour and can be incorporated into smoothies, your own raw concoctions, or sprinkled onto cereals and the like. 

Peruvians have eaten maca for centuries for conditions related to hormonal balance. They use it to increase fertility. It has been established that the alkaloids in the maca root act to improve the functioning of all the endocrine glands including the ovaries and testes, and also acts on the adrenals, giving a feeling of greater energy. And on the pancreas and thyroid as well. What a list!

Maca contains polypeptide proteins, and significant amounts of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Other minerals include iron, silica, and trace amountsof Iodine, manganese, zinc, copper and sodium. Vitamins in maca are riboflavin(B2), thiamine(B1),and vitamin C .

Maca does not itself contain any hormones, but its action on the body jogs the pituitary into producing the precursor hormones which ultimately end up raising oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, as well as helping to balance the adrenal glands, the thyroid and the pancreas. Sexual function is very often improved.
